It is common for people to experience the "winter blues" during the colder months, and one potential remedy could be houseplants. According to Emily How, a horticulture agent with NDSU Extension in Ward County, houseplants can bring joy and provide something to care for even on the coldest days.

Houseplants are beneficial for bringing a touch of nature indoors during winter, but it is important they are placed correctly. Light plays a crucial role in plant health, as it is necessary for photosynthesis—the process where plants convert carbon dioxide and water into sugar. Without adequate light, plants may not grow well or could become damaged.

Understanding your plant's specific needs is vital. For instance, succulents do not always require much sunlight and may prefer bright indirect light and higher humidity levels. This knowledge helps determine how much light your plant requires to thrive indoors.

Different lighting conditions can be likened to reading environments: low light suffices for reading a newspaper; medium light resembles an office setting; high light equates to bright areas like south-facing windows.

The sun's angle and timing throughout the day also affect lighting. East-facing windows offer cool morning sun without excessive heat—ideal for plants that need bright but gentle light, such as ferns. South-facing windows receive maximum sunlight and warmth throughout the day, making them suitable for plants like Hoya.

Proximity to windows influences light intensity as well. An orchid positioned two to three feet from a south-facing bathroom window receives less intense light while benefiting from humidity in that location.

If optimal natural lighting isn't available, investing in plant grow lights might be worthwhile. Moving a struggling plant closer to a brighter window or adding grow lights can enhance its growth conditions.

For those seeking office-friendly houseplants tolerant of medium to low light levels, Peace Lilies, Snake plants, and Pothos are recommended options. More unique choices include Money Trees, Cast Iron Plants, and ZZ plants.

In conclusion, proper lighting benefits both plants and people alike. A sunny spot near a window might uplift spirits just as effectively as it aids plant growth during dreary winter days.
