Kirsten Baesler, Superintendent | North Dakota State Board of Education
Gov. Kelly Armstrong extended congratulations to Kirsten Baesler, the North Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction, on her nomination for the role of Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education at the U.S. Department of Education.
Baesler has been leading the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction since January 2013. She was re-elected to a four-year term in November 2024 and intends to continue her duties until she is confirmed for the federal position.
Her career spans over two decades in education within the Bismarck Public Schools system, where she worked as a classroom teacher, instructional aide, library media specialist, and vice principal. Additionally, Baesler served nine years on the Mandan School Board.
"Superintendent Baesler has the background and experience needed to bring North Dakota common sense to the U.S. Department of Education," Armstrong stated. "She understands that decisions affecting local schools are best left to local school districts, with guidance from the state and limited involvement from the federal government. We wish her all the best in D.C. and look forward to working with her to support 21st century learning environments that engage students, expand educational opportunities and empower parents."
According to state law, once Baesler's confirmation is finalized and she resigns as state superintendent, Gov. Armstrong will appoint an interim replacement who will serve until the next general election scheduled for November 2026.
