Julie Mees has been appointed as the new City Attorney by the Bismarck City Commission. The unanimous decision came after a special meeting held on February 11, where interviews were conducted. Mees verbally accepted the offer from the City of Bismarck.

Mees has been serving as the acting City Attorney since early December and has held the position of Assistant City Attorney since early 2021.

Bismarck Mayor Michael Schmitz expressed his support for Mees, stating, "I have heard some things from other departments and staff in the last 45 days that give me a lot of encouragement regarding the decision to appoint Julie as our new City Attorney. I want our counsel to be approachable. If City staff are calling the Legal Department, then we are avoiding risk."

Initially, four candidates applied for the position, but two withdrew during the selection process. With Mees's appointment as director of the Legal Department, there will be a search for a new Assistant City Attorney.

The Legal Department is responsible for prosecuting Class B Misdemeanors and traffic offenses within city limits. It also provides legal resources to elected officials, boards, and staff on civil and legal matters and supports municipal government operations.

More information about the department can be found online.
