The City of Bismarck has announced the appointment of Michael Mart as the new Public Works Utility Operations Director. Mart, who has been with the city's Engineering Department since 2012, will assume his new role later this month.

Mart's career with the city began as an Engineering Technician in June 2012. He then served as a Project Engineer from 2012 to 2020 and most recently held the position of Senior Project Engineer since January 2020.

"Michael is a wonderful addition to our Public Works Utility Operations Department," said Bismarck City Commissioner Greg Zenker. Zenker oversees portfolios related to Engineering, Storm Water, and Water & Sewer Utilities. "He has been a team player, stepping up in whatever capacity he has been needed and has gained a lot of really good experience in his time in the Engineering Department. We’re looking forward to how he can translate those experiences into this leadership role for our Utility Operations."

Mart will replace Michelle Klose, who plans to retire in March after serving as the Public Works Utility Operations Director since 2016.

Mart holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Engineering from North Dakota State University and obtained his Professional Engineering License in 2016.

Public Works Utility Operations provides several services throughout Bismarck, including Industrial Pretreatment Program, Sanitary Sewer, Stormwater Infrastructure, Utility Billing, Wastewater Treatment, and Water Treatment Plant operations. More information about these services is available online.
