North Dakotans are encouraged to quit smokeless tobacco and oral nicotine products during Through With Chew Week, from February 16 to 22, 2025. Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health is urging individuals ready to become tobacco-free to set a recovery date and create a treatment plan. The organization offers educational materials and support for commercial tobacco and nicotine dependence treatment. Additionally, NDQuits provides free statewide coaching and support through phone and web-based programs.

Alexis Raymond of TPS stated, "If using smokeless tobacco feels like part of the culture in North Dakota, it doesn’t have to. Make a plan on how to avoid triggers during events – and everyday occurrences. Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health can help you identify those triggers and how to avoid them."

Quitting smokeless tobacco brings numerous health benefits such as reducing the risk of serious conditions like oral cancer, gum disease, tooth loss, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Improved oral health includes fresher breath, fewer mouth sores, healthier gums, enhanced energy levels, better taste and smell senses, setting a positive example for others.

Susan Kahler, NCTTS at Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health specializes in tobacco treatment. She provides counseling that helps develop plans to break routines and prepare for cravings. Kahler can recommend nicotine replacement medications which more than double the success rate when combined with counseling.

For assistance with quitting smokeless tobacco, visit hhs.nd.gov/ndquits or contact Susan Kahler at 701-355-1597.
