Bismarck State College (BSC) has announced the appointment of three assistant deans within its Automation, Energy, and Advanced Technology (AEAT) division as part of an academic restructuring initiative. This move aims to maintain excellence in program delivery and workforce readiness.
Jason Dockter will lead several programs within the AEAT division, including Operations Management, Mechatronics, Energy Services, Industrial Automation, Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing), Geographic Information Systems, and Unmanned Aerial Systems (Drones). Dockter brings over 20 years of educational experience to BSC. His previous roles include department chair of technology and STEM education at Valley City State University (VCSU) and technology education instructor at VCSU, Ashley Public School, and Kulm Public School. He holds a Master of Education from VCSU and a Bachelor of Science in education from Minnesota State University Moorhead.
Ashley Placek Olson will oversee the Lineworker, Electric Transmission, and Electric Power programs at BSC. Her background includes serving as a special education teacher and case manager at Bismarck Public Schools. She holds a Master of Science in special education from the University of North Dakota, an M.S. in exercise physiology from Minnesota State University Mankato, and a B.S. in exercise science from the University of Mary.
Mitch McCoy will manage programs such as Petroleum Production Technology, Process Technology, Power Generation, Water and Wastewater Technology, Energy Management, and Mechanical Maintenance Technology. McCoy retired from the North Dakota Army National Guard in June 2024 after serving as First Sergeant of the 2-285th Assault Helicopter Company. He holds a B.S. in business management from the University of Mary.
Alicia Uhde, dean of AEAT at BSC stated: “The combined leadership expertise and passion for education of these three individuals elevates BSC’s innovative programs and further enhances student success.” Uhde emphasized that their diverse backgrounds would enhance BSC's ability to provide innovative programs preparing students for high-demand industries.
Greg Lugar is also part of this leadership team led by Uhde since his promotion to assistant dean in October 2022.
Assistant deans at BSC are responsible for designing course schedules with faculty collaboration to ensure quality academic programming. They supervise new program development while supporting faculty through mentorships aimed at retaining high-quality educators. Their role is crucial for fostering student success towards careers or further studies.
