Doug Burgum confirmed as Secretary of the Interior by U.S. Senate

The United States Senate has confirmed Doug Burgum, former Governor of North Dakota, as Secretary of the Interior with a vote tally of 79 to 18. U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer from North Dakota expressed his support for Burgum's nomination, stating that he is "tailor-made for the Secretary of the Interior." Cramer emphasized North Dakota's adherence to Teddy Roosevelt’s doctrine on public lands, highlighting Burgum's leadership and collaboration with tribal communities.

During Burgum’s confirmation hearing earlier in January, Cramer introduced him to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. He described Burgum as "not just an oil man" but primarily a conservationist. Cramer further elaborated on the Senate floor about Burgum’s understanding of balancing energy development and stewardship, likening him to Theodore Roosevelt.

Burgum's nomination was favorably received by the committee with a bipartisan vote of 18 to 2. Senator Cramer underscored Burgum’s strong connections with tribal leaders in North Dakota. He referenced a letter from Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Chairwoman Janet Alkire, who commended Burgum for respecting traditional values and culture while promoting community wellness.
