The city of Mandan has introduced a boulevard tree planting program, offering residents a $75 reimbursement per tree when they collaborate with the Forestry Division of Public Works and adhere to planting guidelines. This initiative was announced in a press release on April 1, 2025.

According to the press release, once a tree is planted and inspected by city staff, residents or property owners can receive reimbursement for up to half the cost of each tree, up to $75 per tree, with a limit of $300 per property in 2025, depending on available funding. To claim reimbursement, residents must submit the original sales receipt showing the tree species, cost, and vendor details within 30 days of purchase to Mandan Public Works at 411 6th Ave SW. The program has seen strong participation, with approximately 500 trees planted in city boulevards since its inception.

The city is preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary as a Tree City USA in 2026. This designation has been held since 1976 and is based on meeting specific criteria such as maintaining an adequate city forestry budget, having a tree ordinance, and hosting an annual Arbor Day celebration. City leaders are encouraging the public to plant 50 boulevard trees by the end of 2025 as part of this anniversary celebration.

Mandan Municipal Code Sec 115-4-7 outlines property owners' responsibilities regarding trimming or removing trees and shrubs that obstruct public spaces or create hazards. If a tree or shrub interferes with sidewalks, streets, or traffic signals, it is the property owner's responsibility to address the issue. For trees spanning multiple properties, costs are shared equally. The city forester can act immediately on hazardous trees without notice; if owners fail to comply after receiving notice, the city will take action.

The Mandan Public Works Department oversees various municipal services including forestry management. Located at 411 6th Ave SW and led by Director Shane O’Keefe, it manages urban tree care through its Forestry Division and helps maintain Mandan’s status as a Tree City USA.
