The National Science Foundation has announced an award of $1.6 million to the University of North Dakota to support quantum research. The funding will be allocated to two key projects and initiatives.

A sum of $800,000 will be directed towards research aimed at developing new algorithms and schemes to enhance the capabilities of quantum devices. This project seeks to apply these advancements to challenging problems in heavy-element computational chemistry.

An additional $800,000 will support a project focused on the development of quantum light sources that produce pairs of photons compatible with existing telecommunication infrastructure.

Senator Kevin Cramer remarked on the significance of this funding: "This investment by the National Science Foundation is a testament to the cutting-edge research being conducted at the University of North Dakota. It underscores the potential impact that advancements in quantum technology can have across various scientific fields."

The awarded funds are expected to bolster ongoing efforts at the university, contributing significantly to its position as a leader in quantum research.
