Senator John Hoeven today marked the completion of the Heart of America Medical Center (HAMC), outlining this important investment in the future of rural health care in the region. As Ranking Member of the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Committee, Hoeven worked to secure more than $55 million in U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) loans for HAMC to construct a new hospital, clinic, and long-term care facility. The new medical center:

- Has a footprint of nearly 80,000 sq. ft. with 25 beds, the maximum allowed for a Critical Access Hospital (CAH).

- Features new MRI and CT scan machines.

- Includes a wellness and physical therapy center.

- Serves more than 12,000 area residents in Pierce, Benson, McHenry, and Rolette counties.

- Replaces HAMC’s prior facilities in the community, with the original hospital and clinic having been built in the 1940s and being cost-prohibitive to update or repair.

- Will have all services officially transitioned from the prior facilities by September 30.

“I want to thank all of the partners involved in seeing this project through from start to finish, who worked with us to secure $55 million in federal funding and make this tremendous facility a reality for Rugby and the surrounding communities,” said Hoeven. “This medical center is not only an investment in the health and well-being of local residents but will help ensure this region remains vibrant for years to come.”

HAMC’s original hospital and clinic were built in 1948 and had three main additions and renovations in the '60s, '70s, and '90s. After key infrastructure failures, including the emergency room elevator malfunctioning, the cost of repairs exceeded the value added to the old facility. The new facility enables the hospital to provide services more cost-efficiently while maintaining high care standards.
