Norway’s Ambassador to the U.S., Anniken Krutnes, visited Fargo on Friday in her first trip to North Dakota, a state known for its significant Norwegian heritage. Invited by U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Krutnes aimed to highlight the state's cultural ties and economic strengths while discussing defense and national security policies between Norway and the United States.
During events at the Fargo Sons of Norway Kringen Lodge and First Lutheran Church, both Cramer and Krutnes underscored the importance of international alliances and the longstanding friendship between their nations. Referring to joint military exercises, Cramer stated, “A main message we should embrace between our countries is ‘We fly together.’ As friends and allies for decades, by standing together in every aspect of our shared industry, culture, and heritage, we are always stronger.”
Krutnes emphasized Norway's view of the United States as its most crucial ally within NATO. "Norway considers the United States to be our most important ally. We take this relationship very seriously. While we celebrate our shared culture, heritage, and values, even more important is our mutual commitment to world peace," she said.
The discussions also covered support for Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia. “A Russian bully willing to take out one neighbor will not hesitate to take out another,” remarked Cramer. He stressed the importance of supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression.
Krutnes highlighted Norway's contributions to Ukraine through weapons and financial aid. She noted that Norway recently joined other NATO allies in signing a 10-year agreement to support Ukraine.
Further defense issues were addressed during a visit to the 119th Wing of the North Dakota National Guard in Fargo. The day concluded with a public reception at Marcus West Acres Cinema before the premiere of the Norwegian film “Songs of Earth.”
The visit was part of a week-long series of activities marking close ties between Norway and North Dakota ahead of next year's bicentennial celebration of Norwegian immigration to America. Following her participation in the Fargo Marathon 10K on Saturday, Krutnes plans to travel to South Dakota.
Reflecting on her visit, Krutnes stated, “Today’s program truly captured the strong ties between Norway and the U.S., from security to trade and tourism to culture and people-to-people relations.” She expressed gratitude for experiencing traditional Norwegian cuisine provided by local organizations and thanked Senator Cramer for facilitating her visit.
