On Wednesday, the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee convened to address the important mission of the National Cemetery Administration (NCA) in honoring America’s veterans and their families at U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs cemeteries. The NCA, which manages 158 national cemeteries across the country, plays a crucial role in supporting state and tribal veterans’ cemeteries through the Veterans Cemetery Grants Program (VCGP).
At the hearing, U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) questioned Matthew Quinn, the Undersecretary for Memorial Affairs for the VA, regarding the situation in Fargo with the National Cemetery. Senator Cramer expressed gratitude for the support provided in Mandan and inquired about the best way to achieve a positive outcome for all stakeholders involved in Fargo.
In response to Senator Cramer's inquiries, Quinn stated, "We're working through our cemetery operations department to see how the community can donate either the funds or a building, and what it would take to build out that additional 30 acres. We will need to go through some planning on that, but certainly the community interest in Fargo is incredible." Quinn highlighted the importance of community support in enhancing the cemetery's facilities.
Senator Cramer emphasized the significance of innovation and the impact of bureaucracy on facility development. Quinn acknowledged Fargo's influence in shaping the concept of rural cemeteries, stating, "I would credit Fargo and the community there to say, ‘hey Quinn, we think of rural cemetery should be a little bit more than what you have there,’ and we'll continue to work through that."
Senator Cramer's involvement and support for veterans were also noted, including his efforts in securing funding for the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan and his advocacy for bills such as the Keeping Military Families Together Act of 2023 and the Burial Equity for Guards and Reserves Act.
Senator Cramer's active participation in the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee underscores his commitment to advocating for the needs of our nation's veterans and ensuring that their sacrifices are duly honored and recognized.
