The North Dakota Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program has allocated more than $3 million to five communities for infrastructure, public safety, and accessibility projects. The total amount awarded is $3,086,795.86, and the funds come from a combination of the 2025 fiscal year and previous years. According to the North Dakota Department of Commerce, the program received over $10 million in funding requests for fiscal year 2025. At the time of the announcement, not all communities had formally accepted their awards.

Commerce Community Development Director Maria Effertz stated, “The CDBG program is a powerful tool for helping communities address critical infrastructure and public service needs. These awards represent more than just funding. They are investments in safety, accessibility and long-term resilience for North Dakotans.”

The CDBG program provides grants to eligible local governments in North Dakota for projects such as public facilities improvements, housing rehabilitation, and economic development. The primary goal is to benefit low- to moderate-income residents and enhance quality of life. Applications are reviewed and scored by a committee with expertise in public infrastructure and housing.

This year’s recipients are:

- City of Almont: Awarded $1,000,000 for replacing several blocks of aging sanitary sewer, drinking water, and roadway infrastructure to reduce risks associated with deteriorated systems.

- City of Belfield: Awarded $1,000,000 for relocating the city’s lift station to address obstruction issues and lower long-term operational costs.

- City of Cleveland: Awarded $171,795.86 for installing two emergency sirens and permanent generators. Cleveland currently lacks a functioning emergency alert system.

- City of Tappen: Awarded $160,000 to replace the city’s firetruck and improve emergency response capabilities.

- City of Tuttle: Awarded $755,000 for rehabilitating the sanitary sewer collection system and replacing the lift station to improve reliability.

These projects are part of North Dakota’s effort to support strong and sustainable communities. More information about the CDBG program and other resources from the Division of Community Services can be found at http://www.commerce.nd.gov/community-services.
