The city of Mandan has announced that BNSF Railway's Missouri River bridge project will commence double-shift pile driving in early August to complete pier work before the winter freeze.

According to the city of Mandan, the BNSF Railway bridge project team will initiate pile driving in double shifts during the first week of August, concentrating on Piers 5 and 6. The work is expected to last up to two months. The team acknowledges potential community disruptions and expresses gratitude to residents for their patience as they strive to complete key pier construction this season.

BNSF Railway is undertaking the replacement of a 140-year-old bridge over the Missouri River, which connects Bismarck and Mandan. This effort aims to ensure safe and efficient freight movement. The new bridge, designed for a lifespan exceeding 100 years, will support heavier rail cars and allow for future expansion with a second track. Once completed, the old bridge will be dismantled. According to the project website, the initiative seeks to enhance freight transportation, reduce outages, and provide a safer crossing while minimizing environmental impact.

The project website also states that BNSF has invested over $1.5 billion in North Dakota infrastructure over the past decade. The new bridge is intended to meet future transportation needs by supporting the state's economy and industries while maintaining safety and environmental standards.

Mandan has an estimated population of 24,586 as of July 1, 2023, according to the State Data Center. Known for its historical roots as a village for the Mandan tribe, a cavalry fort, and a railroad hub, Mandan continues to grow. The city hosts annual events such as Touch-A-Truck, Rodeo Days, and Buggies-n-Blues that attract thousands of visitors. It offers various recreational facilities including parks, sports complexes, and museums as noted on the city website.
