The city of Mandan has announced the addition of a rescue boat to its fire department's emergency response equipment, funded by grants and local contributions.
According to a press release, at the May 20 City Commission meeting, Mandan Fire Chief Mitch Bitz presented an agreement with the North Dakota Game and Fish Department for funding assistance through the 2025 National Recreational Boat Safety (RBS) Program. The total cost of the rescue boat project is $76,000. The RBS grant will cover half of this cost, while the remaining amount will come from community donations and city reserves.
The need for a dedicated rescue boat was first identified in 2024 to enhance emergency response capabilities on local waterways. The Mandan Fire Department received approval to apply for the grant in August 2024 and began fundraising efforts. By spring 2025, according to a press release, the department secured $39,000 in donations from 11 local organizations, exceeding the required matching amount needed to proceed with the purchase.
The rescue boat will be stationed at Lakewood Station 2 and must be purchased, delivered, and fully paid for by September 30. The department is currently developing training programs to ensure personnel can operate the vessel safely and effectively. City officials have approved both the agreement and purchase, with plans for the Fire Department to formally recognize contributing organizations at a future date.
According to city information, the Mandan City Commission meets twice monthly to address local government matters. The commission consists of Mayor James Froelich and Commissioners Mike Braun, Ryan Heinsohn, Dennis Rohr, and Craig Sjoberg. Meeting agendas are posted by Friday before meetings, with minutes available after approval at subsequent meetings. Past records can be requested via phone or email. Meetings are broadcast live on local cable, radio, and online platforms.
The Mandan Fire Department is described as a professional team focused on protecting life, property, and the environment through various services including fire suppression and public education. Led by Fire Chief Mitchell Bitz, it emphasizes training and integrity while serving Mandan’s residents.
