The city of Mandan has announced a new public art initiative, the Mandan Art Alley, set to be installed this summer behind the 200 block of West Main Street between First and Second Avenue NW.

According to local sources, the downtown public art project was initially outlined in Mandan’s 2018 Downtown Plan but regained momentum in 2024. It is spearheaded by local business owners, event organizers, and arts supporters. The project is supported by multiple funding sources, including $35,000 from the Northern Plains Heritage Foundation and contributions from other arts-focused organizations. Additionally, the Mandan City Commission approved up to $35,000 in supplemental support from the Mandan Visitors Fund, which utilizes local hospitality tax revenue for projects that attract visitors.

Originally intended for five to seven large murals, the project's scope expanded to 15 murals due to additional support from the Visitors Fund. The first phase will feature works highlighting Indigenous history, immigration, land and water connections, community stories, and forward-looking themes centered on youth. All mural locations have been confirmed with signed agreements from property owners. A public artist call earlier this year resulted in the selection of 14 artists to create these murals; five of whom have direct ties to Mandan as residents or through local studio space.

Mandan's population was estimated at 24,586 as of July 1, 2023, according to the State Data Center. Known for its historical roots as a village for the Mandan tribe and as a cavalry fort and railroad hub, Mandan continues to grow. The city hosts annual events such as Touch-A-Truck, Rodeo Days, and Buggies-n-Blues that draw thousands of visitors. Various recreational facilities are available in Mandan including parks, sports complexes, and museums.

The Mandan City Commission comprises Mayor James Froelich and Commissioners Mike Braun, Ryan Heinsohn, Dennis Rohr, and Craig Sjoberg. They meet twice monthly to address local government matters. Meeting agendas are posted by Friday before meetings with minutes available after approval at subsequent meetings. Past meeting records can be requested via phone or email. Meetings are broadcast live on local cable channels as well as radio and online platforms with replays available.
