North Dakota is preparing to open the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library (TRPL) in 2026, coinciding with the United States' 250th anniversary. The library will be located in the Badlands near Medora and aims to honor the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States.
The TRPL is situated on a bluff overlooking the Little Missouri River at the entrance to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Designed by Snøhetta, an architectural firm known for projects like the Oslo Opera House, the library will meet the Living Building Challenge standards. This means it will generate its own energy, treat its own water, and work harmoniously with nature.
"The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform how we tell the story of one of America's most influential leaders," said Sara Otte Coleman, Director of North Dakota Tourism. "Roosevelt's time in North Dakota shaped his values and vision. This library will do the same for every visitor—sparking discovery, connection, and a deeper understanding of our shared history all within the beautiful badlands of North Dakota."
Visitors to TRPL can expect interactive exhibits and immersive storytelling that highlight Roosevelt's commitment to conservation and public service. The library will also emphasize his connection to North Dakota, particularly his years as a rancher in the Badlands.
TRPL is collaborating with Microsoft to create an AI-powered digital platform that consolidates Roosevelt's archives from various collections worldwide. "We're creating a People's Presidential Library that welcomes everyone—physically, digitally, and emotionally," said Ed O'Keefe, CEO of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation. "We are proud to open our doors in North Dakota, the very place that so profoundly shaped the indomitable spirit of Roosevelt."
The library is expected to boost tourism in North Dakota by offering educational experiences and themed travel opportunities related to Theodore Roosevelt.
