A fatal crash occurred on May 5, 2025, at approximately 1:05 PM on northbound I-29, about 2.5 miles north of Thompson. The road and weather conditions were reported as good and sunny, respectively. The incident involved a head-on collision between two vehicles.

The first vehicle, a 2015 Chevrolet Traverse driven by an 83-year-old female from Aneta, ND, was traveling the wrong way in the northbound lanes. She was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene. The second vehicle, a 2018 GMC Sierra driven by a 42-year-old male from Grand Forks, was traveling northbound when the collision occurred. He was using his seatbelt and airbags deployed during the crash. He sustained serious injuries and was transported to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks by ambulance.

The crash led to the closure of the northbound lanes of I-29 for approximately two hours while authorities investigated and cleared the scene. Agencies involved in responding to the crash included the North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP), Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office, Thompson Fire & Rescue, and Altru Ambulance.

"The crash remains under investigation by the ND Highway Patrol," according to Lieutenant Ryan Panasuk.
