A fatal crash occurred on May 5, 2025, at approximately 1:05 PM on northbound I-29, about 2.5 miles north of Thompson. The collision involved two vehicles and resulted in the death of one driver and serious injuries to another.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) reported that a 2015 Chevrolet Traverse was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-29 when it collided head-on with a 2018 GMC Sierra. The driver of the Chevrolet Traverse, an 83-year-old woman from Aneta, ND, was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene. The driver of the GMC Sierra, a 42-year-old man from Grand Forks, was seriously injured despite using his seatbelt and having airbags deployed. He was transported by ambulance to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks.
The crash led to the closure of the northbound lanes for approximately two hours while authorities investigated and cleared the scene. Agencies involved in responding to the incident included the NDHP, Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office, Thompson Fire & Rescue, and Altru Ambulance.
"The crash remains under investigation by the ND Highway Patrol," said Lieutenant Ryan Panasuk.
