Fatal motorcycle crash on Highway 49 under investigation

On May 13, 2025, a fatal motorcycle crash occurred on Highway 49 at mile marker 66.5 in Morton County. The incident involved a single vehicle, a 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Ryan Abels, aged 52, from Carson.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 5:00 PM Mountain Time under clear weather and dry road conditions. Abels was traveling south between Glen Ullin and Elgin when he failed to negotiate a curve and went off the roadway. He sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation into the crash. It has been noted that Abels was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Morton County Sheriff’s Office, Glen Ullin Fire and Rescue, and Glen Ullin Ambulance.
