The city of Mandan has announced that Montana-Dakota Utilities will commence a months-long project to replace natural gas mains and service lines in part of the city. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to enhance safety and reliability.
According to Montana-Dakota Utilities, the pipeline replacement effort in Mandan is a component of a long-term system maintenance plan focused on gas line safety and performance. The sections of pipeline selected for updates are based on their condition and operational factors. Work is scheduled to begin on May 27 and is expected to last four to five months, contingent upon weather conditions and other potential delays. Temporary interruptions in gas service will occur, with a company representative contacting each affected customer to arrange for a brief shutoff and relighting of appliances, as said in a press release.
Montana-Dakota Utilities Co. regularly reviews its gas distribution system through its Distribution Integrity Management Program to ensure continued safe and reliable operations. To remain compliant with state and federal regulations, the company selects pipeline segments for replacement based on their physical condition and maintenance history. MDU has conducted similar replacement efforts in multiple cities since 2020, according to its website.
Established in 1924, Montana-Dakota Utilities Co. initially served small farm communities in Montana and North Dakota. Over time, it expanded significantly by acquiring smaller companies and growing alongside the communities it serves. Now a subsidiary of MDU Resources Group, Inc., based in Bismarck, North Dakota, the company provides natural gas and electric services across parts of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. It covers over 168,000 square miles and serves approximately 355,000 customers while emphasizing community involvement and aiming to deliver affordable, reliable energy.
Mandan has an estimated population of 24,586 as of July 1, 2023, according to the State Data Center. Known for its historical roots as a village for the Mandan tribe, a cavalry fort, and a railroad hub, the city continues to grow. Mandan hosts annual events such as Touch-A-Truck, Rodeo Days, and Buggies-n-Blues that attract thousands of visitors. The city offers various recreational facilities including parks, sports complexes, and museums.
