The Bismarck Fire Department has issued a set of safety tips for outdoor grilling, emphasizing the importance of proper precautions to prevent fire hazards. The department highlights that grills placed too close to flammable materials pose significant risks.

According to data from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), propane grill users should check gas tanks for leaks before use. An instructional video on leak detection is available from the NFPA.

Grill maintenance is crucial; removing grease or fat buildup can help avoid potential fires. The department advises placing grills away from homes, deck railings, and under eaves or overhanging branches.

For those using gas grills, it is essential to open the lid before lighting. Safety around children and pets is also stressed, recommending they stay at least three feet away from the grill area.

Charcoal grill users are advised to only use charcoal starter fluid and never add other flammable liquids to the fire. Once grilling is complete, coals should cool completely before being disposed of in a metal container.

Finally, the Bismarck Fire Department reminds residents never to leave grills unattended while in use.
