The City of Mandan has announced significant progress on the BNSF Railway Missouri River Bridge Project, which includes continuous work on two new river piers between Bismarck and Mandan.
According to the city of Mandan, crews are focusing on constructing river piers on the east side of the Bismarck-Mandan railroad bridge project. Double shifts are being implemented to meet deadlines for removing cofferdams, used to build the piers before winter freeze-up. Some work will occur overnight, with pile driving during certain phases, though quieter tasks will be prioritized.
The Bismarck Bridge project is advancing with the construction of Piers 5 and 6 and other work on the east side. The section of River Road Trail near the bridge will be temporarily closed for safety reasons during the construction of Pier 4.
BNSF Railway is replacing a 140-year-old bridge over the Missouri River connecting Bismarck and Mandan to ensure safe and efficient freight movement. The new bridge is designed for a lifespan exceeding 100 years and will support heavier rail cars while allowing future expansion for a second track. Once completed, the old bridge will be removed. According to the project website, this initiative aims to improve freight transportation, reduce outages, and provide a safer crossing while minimizing environmental impact.
BNSF has invested over $1.5 billion in North Dakota infrastructure in the past decade. The new bridge is expected to meet future transportation needs by supporting the state’s economy and industries while maintaining safety and environmental standards.
Mandan has an estimated population of 24,586 as of July 1, 2023, according to the State Data Center. Known for its historical roots as a village for the Mandan tribe, a cavalry fort, and a railroad hub, Mandan continues to grow. The city hosts annual events such as Touch-A-Truck, Rodeo Days, and Buggies-n-Blues that attract thousands of visitors. Various recreational facilities are available in Mandan, including parks, sports complexes, and museums.
