The city of Mandan has announced the commencement of its Spring Clean-Up Week, which began on April 21 and will continue through April 26. This initiative offers special waste collection services and free access to the landfill for residents. The announcement was made in a press release dated April 1, 2025.
According to the city of Mandan, during Spring Clean-Up Week, residents can dispose of items such as furniture and appliances at the city landfill from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Additionally, large items can be placed at the boulevard curb for pickup, but only in front of homes and not in alleyways. These items must be set out by 5 a.m. on the regular garbage collection day and no more than 24 hours before pickup. Household garbage should be kept separate, and any items not clearly marked for disposal may be left behind.
Accepted items include those that can be lifted by two people, such as empty appliances. The clean-up crews will not collect from private property or streets; therefore, apartment and mobile home residents are required to place items on public roads. Items not accepted include animal remains, construction materials, carpet, sod, rocks, dirt, tires, oil, batteries, liquids, hazardous waste, yard clippings, branches, and large amounts of cardboard. Tires can be dropped off at the landfill for a fee during this week.
The landfill is situated three miles west of Mandan. Unsecured loads brought to the landfill are subject to a $20 fee. Grass, leaf, and garden waste must be taken to designated collection sites that opened on April 1, weather permitting. Unauthorized dumping at these sites may result in a $500 fine. Cardboard and newspaper drop-off bins previously located at 810 8th Ave SE have been removed; larger cardboard items can now be recycled at Trans Trash’s facility at 1800 40th Ave SE.
The city of Mandan Public Works Department manages various municipal services including forestry operations, grounds maintenance, landfill operations, household garbage and recycling collection, cemetery care, street maintenance, and utility management. The department is led by Director Shane O’Keefe and is located at 411 6th Ave SW. According to the city of Mandan's statement about its Forestry Division within Public Works Department responsibilities include urban tree care which contributes to maintaining Mandan’s status as a Tree City USA.
