Dickinson State University (DSU) has announced the introduction of its first Storybook Showdown, a storytelling competition catering to both high school and DSU students. This event aims to encourage creativity and communication skills, with high school students vying for scholarship amounts of $1,000 for first place, $750 for second, and $500 for third. DSU students compete for cash prizes, with $300 for first place, $150 for second, and $50 for third.
The competition invites students to perform a seven-minute monologue from a chosen book or original story, allowing the use of costumes, props, and sound effects to enhance their storytelling. Cassidy Venner, Graduate Assistant for the Theater Club, stated, "They provide a platform to showcase talent, push creative boundaries, and gain valuable experience. Events like the Storybook Showdown deserve to be celebrated and supported."
Sarah Crossingham, an assistant professor of education, added, "We have incredibly talented students on campus and in the area, especially in speech and theatre. This is a fantastic way to showcase those talents while encouraging strong communication skills."
Set for April 23 at 1:30 PM, the event will be held in Stickney Auditorium on the DSU campus. Participants must perform from a provided pre-written storybook, ensuring that stories remain suitable for a general or young audience, with no alterations allowed. Performers are encouraged to use a variety of storytelling techniques, such as voice modulation and character voices, to engage the audience. The performances, judged on creativity, clarity, and overall delivery, must be under seven minutes. A panel of judges will use a specific rubric for scoring, with their decisions being final.
Participants are responsible for bringing their own safe and manageable props and equipment. This new initiative at DSU offers students an opportunity to express themselves, compete for prizes, and connect with other storytellers.
The Storybook Showdown presents a new platform for creative expression. Join the event on April 23 for an engaging and competitive experience.
