The Interstate 94 Exit 161 interchange project in Bismarck, North Dakota, has reached a significant phase as crews prepare to install steel girders for a new bridge. This phase will necessitate a series of lane closures on I-94 near Exit 161, scheduled to last for two to three weeks.
Beginning April 7, both eastbound and westbound inside lanes on I-94 will be closed in preparation for the construction work. From Tuesday, April 15, traffic at Exit 161 will be rerouted onto exit ramps across Centennial Road/Bismarck Expressway and then back onto I-94 via the on-ramps, between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. This detour will be controlled by existing traffic signals on Centennial Road/Bismarck Expressway. While outside lanes of I-94 will reopen daily, inside lanes will stay closed for ongoing bridge work during the daytime.
This alternating schedule is expected to continue through late April or early May. A protective canopy will be set up under the new bridge to safeguard passing traffic.
Drivers are encouraged to adhere to detour signs during nightly closures and exercise caution in the work zone. Speed limits will be reduced, and drivers should stay alert for workers and construction equipment.
The I-94 Exit 161 interchange project, initiated in the spring of 2024, will proceed through the summer of 2026. The project aims to improve traffic flow by eliminating two left-turn movements and incorporating right-turn loops for more efficient travel. NDDOT has expressed gratitude for the public’s patience and cooperation as this essential infrastructure project progresses.
