Dickinson State University (DSU) hosted the annual Southwest Regional Science Olympiad on March 27, 2025. The event saw participation from 217 students representing nine schools, forming a total of 19 teams split between nine middle school teams and ten high school teams.

The Olympiad was organized by DSU's science faculty. Dr. Liz Freedman-Fowler, dean of the School of Applied Sciences, expressed enthusiasm about the event, noting, "We’re always excited to host the Science Olympiad. I participated in events like this in high school, and they helped me maintain my love of science. They also prepared me for college and a career in science.”

The competition featured new events and aimed to foster scientific knowledge and skills among young individuals. The Science Olympiad is an international nonprofit organization committed to improving science education, promoting student interest in the field, and recognizing excellence among students and teachers.

Samantha Harris, a freshman chemical engineering major, shared her experience, “Science Olympiad sparked my intense love for chemistry, but also for real-world applications.” She added, "When I participated in Science Olympiad, I was thrown into events like fossils and rocks and minerals. These experiences made me appreciate not only physical sciences but also biological sciences. Because of this, I decided to major in chemical engineering with an emphasis on biology. Over the years, I also discovered an interest in physics, and I’m now considering adding nanoscience as a minor.” Harris, who attended DSU’s Science Olympiad in high school, was inspired to pursue her Bachelor of Science degree at DSU. She is among 96 student volunteers contributing to the event's success.

The competition included numerous events, with top positions secured across multiple disciplines. Winners of various events, such as Air Trajectory and Anatomy and Physiology, were announced. Hope Christian Academy performed consistently, securing the top spot in several categories across both middle school and high school divisions, including the overall team results in both categories.

The top five overall teams from each division will now proceed to the State Science Olympiad, set to take place on April 26 at North Dakota State University (NDSU).
