The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) operates a patient advocacy program across its medical centers to handle feedback from veterans and their families. This program involves patient advocates who collaborate with VA staff to address veterans' concerns.
U.S. Senators Kevin Cramer and Jacky Rosen have introduced the Strengthening VA Patient Advocacy for Rural Veterans Act of 2025. This legislation aims to improve the VA's patient advocate program, specifically benefiting rural veterans receiving care outside traditional medical centers. The proposal includes appointing a dedicated patient advocate for veterans in rural and highly rural areas, enhancing their access to healthcare services. Additionally, the bill includes reporting requirements to boost accountability and inform Congress about challenges faced by veterans seeking care.
Senator Cramer emphasized the importance of patient advocates in helping veterans navigate bureaucratic hurdles within the VA system. He stated, "Patient advocates really play an important role in helping our veterans navigate the incredible VA red tape." He added that the bill acknowledges unique challenges faced by rural veterans and offers targeted support through dedicated advocates.
Senator Rosen highlighted issues encountered by Nevada's rural veterans in accessing VA medical care. She remarked, "Far too many veterans in rural parts of Nevada face barriers to receiving the VA medical care and support they deserve." She noted that this bipartisan legislation would help establish VA patient advocates for rural areas, ensuring these veterans receive necessary benefits despite their location.
The Strengthening VA Patient Advocacy for Rural Veterans Act of 2025 has garnered support from organizations such as Disabled American Veterans (DAV), the American Legion (TAL), and America’s Warrior Partnership (AWP). DAV expressed gratitude towards Senator Cramer for introducing this legislation, stating it would enhance care coordination through designated patient advocates focused on overcoming barriers specific to rural veteran patients.
