The North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department (NDPRD) is calling for applications for the Recreational Trails Program (RTP), beginning April 1, 2024. This program, an 80/20 matching grant initiative, offers financial support for both motorized and non-motorized trail projects. The RTP is managed by the NDPRD at the state level and federally by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
Eligible projects under the RTP include new recreation trail construction, restoration of existing trails, development and rehabilitation of trailside facilities, purchasing equipment for trail maintenance, land acquisition, and conducting trail accessibility assessments. "Our video series, Miles and Moments, highlights our grant projects," said a spokesperson from NDPRD. They encourage potential applicants to view these videos to understand the impact of such projects in North Dakota.
Entities eligible to apply are cities, counties, townships, park boards and districts, state and federal agencies, registered non-profit organizations, and federally recognized tribes.
NDPRD's goal with these grants is to improve access to quality trails across North Dakota while supporting sustainable outdoor recreation. By fostering partnerships and enhancing trail safety with a focus on environmental conservation, NDPRD aims to provide diverse outdoor experiences for future generations.
Applications must be submitted through Web Grants on the NDPRD website by April 13, 2025. Pre-award notification letters are expected in May. The application processing period ranges from nine to twelve months before funds are awarded.
