The city of Mandan has announced updates to the BNSF Railway Missouri River Bridge Project, which include the closure of a section of River Road Trail in Bismarck in March. This announcement was made in a news release issued in February.

According to the release, crews are currently constructing walls and caps for Piers 8, 11, and 12 of the bridge project, with plans to commence work on Pier 4 on the eastern side of the river. To ensure safety during construction, a section of River Road Trail in Bismarck will be closed starting March 1, 2025. The closure will affect approximately 200 feet on both sides of the bridge project site. Signs will be posted to notify the public, and cooperation is requested to avoid the closed area.

BNSF Railway is undertaking this project to replace the 140-year-old bridge over the Missouri River that connects Bismarck and Mandan. The new bridge is designed for a lifespan exceeding 100 years and will support heavier rail cars while allowing for future expansion to accommodate a second track. Once completed, the old bridge will be dismantled. According to the project website, this initiative aims to enhance freight transportation, reduce outages, and provide a safer crossing while minimizing environmental impact.

BNSF has invested over $1.5 billion in North Dakota infrastructure over the past decade. The new bridge is expected to meet future transportation needs by supporting the state’s economy and industries while maintaining safety and environmental standards.

Mandan has an estimated population of 24,586 as of July 1, 2023, according to the State Data Center. Known for its historical roots as a village for the Mandan tribe, a cavalry fort, and a railroad hub, Mandan continues to grow. The city hosts annual events such as Touch-A-Truck, Rodeo Days, and Buggies-n-Blues that attract thousands of visitors. It also offers various recreational facilities including parks, sports complexes, and museums.
