Each spring, the North Dakota League of Cities organizes a statewide essay contest titled "If I Were Mayor" for third and seventh-grade students. The initiative aims to engage young individuals in thinking about public service and community leadership. Participants are required to write essays on why they believe their community is commendable and what changes they would implement if they were mayor.

The winners of the League's essay contest will be revealed during City Government Week in April. They will receive a $150 cash prize, and their essays will be published in the League’s magazine, CITYScan.

For more information on the rules and submission process, interested parties can contact Jennifer at 701-223-3518 or via email at jennifer@ndlc.org.

In Mandan, city staff will handle all local entries separately from the NDLC’s contest. Judges will select winners from both third and seventh grades. These local winners will be invited to attend a Mandan City Commission meeting, where their class will also enjoy a visit with the mayor accompanied by donuts.
