The State Board of Animal Health is scheduled to convene at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, September 17, in the North Dakota Department of Agriculture’s conference room on the sixth floor of the State Capitol in Bismarck.

Individuals interested in participating by phone are asked to contact Michelle Mielke at 701-328-2233 before 9 a.m. on the day of the meeting for call-in details.

The draft agenda includes introductions and roll call, approval of minutes from the June 11 meeting, and reports or updates from several organizations such as the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, North Dakota Department of Health & Human Services, NDSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, ND Stockmen’s Association, Independent Beef Association of North Dakota (I-BAND), USDA Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service Wildlife Services, and USDA-APHIS Veterinary Services.

Topics for discussion include animal disease traceability initiatives, electronic health certificates, federal rules regarding electronic tags for livestock such as bovine and porcine species, and disease updates on anthrax, high path avian influenza, equine infectious anemia, new world screwworm, tuberculosis, and West Nile virus. The board will also address matters related to cervid slaughter facilities, farmed elk management updates, non-traditional livestock issues, U.S. Swine Health Improvement Plan participation requirements for importation and brucellosis abortus protocols.

Other agenda items involve petting zoos and circuses regulations; border movements; public animal exhibitions at rodeos or fairs; fiscal updates; reviews regarding inhumane care cases; administrative rules updates; violations that may be discussed during an executive session; as well as announcements about upcoming meetings including conventions hosted by local associations throughout September through November.

Some discussions may occur in executive session rather than during portions open to the public. Additional topics could be introduced if this is a regular meeting. For special or emergency meetings only listed topics will be addressed. Agenda items may be rearranged during proceedings at the discretion of the Board President.
