Jason Stugelmeyer is set to become the new Bismarck police chief on August 1. His appointment was confirmed by the Bismarck City Commission following a recommendation from a hiring panel during its July 22 meeting.
Commissioner John Risch, who oversees the police portfolio, expressed confidence in Stugelmeyer's capabilities: "Our community is extremely fortunate to have such a qualified person to head our police department. I’m looking forward to working with Chief Stugelmeyer as he ensures Bismarck remains a safe place to live and work." Risch noted his support for Stugelmeyer, highlighting their past year of collaboration and Stugelmeyer's experience in addressing citizen concerns promptly.
Stugelmeyer advanced within the Bismarck Police Department (BPD) when he became deputy chief after Dave Draovitch's promotion to chief in 2018. With over two decades of service, including 15 years with the West Dakota SWAT Team, he has earned several accolades such as three Badge of Hope awards and two Meritorious Service Awards. He was also named BPD Officer of the Year in 2007. Stugelmeyer holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the University of Minnesota-Moorhead.
The search for Draovitch’s successor began after his retirement announcement in May. Seven applicants met the qualifications, leading to four candidates advancing through an accomplishment survey and testing process. One candidate withdrew before this phase commenced. The final decision came down to interviews between Stugelmeyer and Daniel Weigel, University of North Dakota Patrol Commander, conducted by the hiring committee on July 17.
