Two-vehicle crash under investigation after serious injury near Petersburg

A two-vehicle crash occurred on July 7, 2025, at the intersection of US Highway 2 and 1st Avenue in Petersburg, North Dakota. The incident involved a Hyundai Tucson and a Freightliner truck. According to reports, the Hyundai was driven by Michael Callahan, aged 69 from Minnewaukan, ND, who was uninjured in the crash. His passenger, Jean Callahan, aged 66 also from Minnewaukan, sustained serious injuries.

The Freightliner was operated by John Fuentes, aged 46 from Scottsbluff, NE. He was not injured in the collision. Both vehicles were equipped with seat belts and airbags which deployed during the crash.

The accident happened when the Hyundai Tucson was traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 2 and collided with the right side of the northbound Freightliner on N.D. Highway 32 as it crossed onto 1st Avenue. The Hyundai came to rest in the east ditch of 1st Avenue while the Freightliner ended up in the west ditch.

Emergency services including the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Nelson County Sheriff’s Department, and Michigan Ambulance Service responded to the scene. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
