Cass County officials have issued a warning to residents as extreme cold temperatures continue to threaten public safety. They are urging people to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and others.

Officials emphasize the importance of checking on vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly, those experiencing homelessness, and anyone without adequate heating. Residents are encouraged to contact local shelters or emergency services if they or someone they know needs a warm place to stay.

Residents are advised to limit outdoor exposure. If going outside is unavoidable, it is recommended to dress in multiple layers, including a hat, gloves, and an insulated coat.

Awareness of the warning signs of frostbite and hypothermia is crucial. Frostbite can occur within minutes on exposed skin and presents symptoms like numbness, discoloration, and a waxy texture. Hypothermia symptoms include confusion, shivering, slurred speech, and exhaustion.

Caution is also advised when using heating sources. Space heaters should be used safely and never left unattended due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning from gas or wood-burning appliances indoors.

Travel should be avoided if possible since extreme cold can lead to vehicle malfunctions. If travel is necessary, having an emergency kit with blankets, food, and water in the vehicle is recommended.

For more information on cold weather safety and available resources, residents can visit ready.gov/winter-weather. In cases where someone appears in distress due to the cold, calling 911 immediately is advised.
