Julie Mees has been appointed as the new City Attorney for Bismarck following a unanimous decision by the Bismarck City Commission. She accepted the position verbally after a special meeting held on February 11, where interviews were conducted.

Mees had been serving as acting City Attorney since December and has held the role of Assistant City Attorney since early 2021.

Bismarck Mayor Michael Schmitz expressed his support for Mees's appointment, stating, "I have heard some things from other departments and staff in the last 45 days that give me a lot of encouragement regarding the decision to appoint Julie as our new City Attorney." He emphasized the importance of having an approachable legal counsel, adding, "If City staff are calling the Legal Department, then we are avoiding risk."

Initially, four candidates applied for the position. However, two withdrew during the selection process. With Mees's promotion to director of the Legal Department, a search will begin soon for a new Assistant City Attorney.
