The Bismarck Fire Department is seeking assistance from residents to ensure fire hydrants remain accessible amid increasing snowfall. With over 4,500 hydrants across the city, many risk becoming obstructed by snow accumulation. The department encourages community members to participate in its "Adopt a Hydrant" initiative this winter.
"By helping us you could save your neighbor’s house or your own in an emergency," stated the department. The initiative asks individuals to clear snow around their adopted hydrant after each snowfall and once streets are plowed. This involves clearing snow to ground level within a three to four-foot radius and creating a path to the street.
"This helps to significantly reduce the time it takes for the fire department to get water on a fire by ensuring that fire crews can find and access the hydrant when we need it most," explained the department. Business owners are also encouraged to keep nearby hydrants clear.
The Bismarck Fire Department expressed gratitude for community efforts in maintaining safety during winter conditions.
