In a recent Senate Defense Appropriations Committee hearing, Senator John Hoeven obtained a pledge from Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Charles Brown. The commitment was to persist in modernizing the U.S. nuclear deterrent, with a particular focus on the intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) that constitute the land-based segment of the nuclear triad. Additionally, it included ensuring that the U.S. maintains its edge in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.
"With challenges and growing unrest around the globe, it’s more important than ever that our men and women in uniform have the capabilities and tools necessary to deter our enemies and keep us safe," stated Hoeven. He further noted that he had secured General Brown's agreement to continue updating their nuclear deterrent, including ICBMs, which are crucial to Minot Air Force Base.
Moreover, General Brown concurred with the need for advanced ISR capabilities to support forces worldwide. Grand Forks Air Force Base is at the forefront of providing these services. "These are vital missions for our state and the defense of our nation," added Hoeven.
