The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) has announced that the University of North Dakota (UND) Energy and Environmental Research Center will be the recipient of a substantial grant. The center will receive $11,600,000 to conduct research on enhanced oil recovery techniques.

The funding is designated for investigating the effects of injecting CO2 into an unconventional reservoir in the Bakken Formation. This research aims to not only increase oil and gas production but also to extend the lifespans of wells in the area. The ultimate goal is to benefit from these advancements in the long run.

According to the DOE, the research will focus on assessing the feasibility of permanently storing CO2 in unconventional shale oil and gas reservoirs. Additionally, the project aims to repurpose existing infrastructure to optimize the efficiency of these operations.

This significant grant highlights the commitment to advancing research in energy and environmental fields. The University of North Dakota's Energy and Environmental Research Center is poised to make strides in enhanced oil recovery, with the potential to shape the future of oil and gas production techniques.
